Lot 316

1835 N-5 R2 PCGS graded MS65BN. PCGS graded MS-65 Brown. Head of 1834 with Small 8 and Stars. Lustrous light chocolate and bluish steel blending to light olive on the obverse. Slightly faded mint red covers the protected areas on both sides, about 10% of the reverse showing some of the original color. The only defect is a small splash of darker toning on the right bottom of the N in ONE. Nicely struck E-MDS with a strong double profile (from die bounce) extending from the tip of the coronet down to the bottom of the chin. The doubling is bold and can be seen at arm's length making this a great example of the minting anomaly. The fine die crack through the base of the 835 is clear. Called MS60+ and tied for CC#9 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS61 and tied for CC#3, his photo #21569. Our grade is MS63. PCGS Population 2; 1 finer in 66BN.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.
Ex Anderson Dupont, Stack's 9/24/54:739-Herbert Oechsner, Stack's 9/8/88:135-Tony Terranova 9/26/88.
