Lot 311

1835 N-1 R1 PCGS graded MS65RB. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. Head of 1834 with Large 8 and Stars. Lustrous bluish steel and olive brown with mint red covering 25% of the surface, mostly on the reverse. Very attractive with only a few trivial defects, including a microscopic speck of carbon on the upper right point of star 1 and a faint planchet crease arcing down from the right bottom of the C in CENT to the left end of the line below, as struck. Nicely struck MDS showing fine radial die flowlines in the fields on both sides. Called MS65 and CC#2 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS63 and tied for CC#2, his photo #21256. Our grade is MS64. The finest example in both census lists is held in the ANS Museum, so this piece is at least tied for finest available honors. PCGS Population 1; none finer.
Estimated Value $3,000-UP.
Ex Dr. Henry W. Beckwith 1/30/1919-B. H. Collins-B. Max Mehl personal collection-T. James Clarke 10/54.
