Lot 1497

1904 $5 Liberty. NGC graded Proof 64 Cameo. Fully brilliant and untoned. 136 struck. The years 1900 through 1905 saw an increase in sales of Proof gold coins of all denominations, either in four-coin sets or as singles. Production in 1904 amounted to 136 Proof half eagles, the fifth highest Proof mintage of the design. Needle-point devices rise forcefully above deep mirrors in the fields. Both sides exhibit fully bright-gold color, the fields appearing to "go black" when the coin is angled just right under a light. There are no grade-limiting blemishes and only a few wispy hairlines on this very attractive coin. Pop 21; 19 finer; 1 in 64 Star; 4 in 65; 9 in 66; 4 in 67; 1 in 68. (PCGS # 88499) .
Estimated Value $11,000 - 12,000.

Realized $11,500
