1892-S $5 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-63. Rich golden toning. 298,400 minted. A beautiful, frosty-gold coin, there are no unsettling bagmarks on either side and the luster skips and dances across the surface unimpeded. Keen-edged devices throughout accomplish the same thing for the viewer in giving us a high level of confidence in the grade as well as in the supreme originality of the coin. Pop 20; 6 finer in 64. 1892 was a time of strong emotions when it came to money matters. The free silver party was fighting hard in Congress, and on July 1, 1892, a bill providing for the absolute free coinage of silver passed the Senate, aided by the vote of Senator David. B. Hill of New York. The measure was killed in the house, but the growing strength of the silver party excited just alarm among the powerful banking interests that ran Wall Street, for they preferred the prestige and stability of a gold standard. In 1892, President Harrison was defeated for re-election by former President Cleveland, a pro-gold advocate.
