Lot 159

1884 Nickel Three Cents. PCGS graded Proof 67. Gleaming gray nickel color, so intense it almost looks like silver. A tiny cut in the field appears at about 7:30 o'clock reverse: isn't it curious that many flawless Proofs grade 66 at these services, while another, like this, with a nick, is given the 67 grade. We're not quibbling with the grade here--this is a marvelous coin!--only with the human equation that seems to pick a 66 versus a 67 without solid reason. Another point, though: this is a date which is worth $300 in VG, and the gleaming Gem Proofs, by comparison, are truly a bargain at today's market levels.

Realized $1,150
