Lot 950

c. 1880 Original Face Design Artwork for Playing Cards. Eight hand-drawn, pen and ink designs for the faces of a set of playing cards, plus another drawing for the back of the cards, all in 4 x 2¼ in. format. The designs are for the Ace, Jack, Knight and King of Swords and the same values for Clubs, though in this case the club is the wooden type. Each of these face cards is enclosed in a box of precisely ruled lines and appear to be finished. The design for the back, however, was left unfinished, but does include the name of the intended printer for this deck, "Sebastian Comas y Ricart." No place is given, but we know that this firm operated in Barcelona, Spain as early as 1848 and as late as 1926. These designs appear to be the same as those used on a set cataloged in the Fournier Museum catalog, Volume 2, Spain #474, which Fournier dates to the end of the 1800's. Fine; evenly age toned, and tipped to a sheet of heavy paper. (9 items on 1 card).
Estimated Value $600 - 800.
