Cross With Stations of the Cross & Crucifix From the Catacombs of Saint Callisto. 7 x 4¼ in. gold-plate cross with fourteen silver inset engravings of the stations of the cross, with a crucifixion inset in the center. On the back is engraved "Catacombe S. Callisto / Roma." The cross hangs by a small ring in a worn triptych case with an easel back for exhibiting; "Adoramus Te, Christe, et benedicimus Tibi," is engraved on the left side, and "auia per sanctam Crucern tuam redemisti mundam" on the right side; the case is worn. The catacombs of San Callisto, known as the Church of Rome's cemetery, contain the tombs of nine popes buried in the Crypt. They extend over more than thirteen miles on four floors.
