[Cromwell, Oliver] 1658 Announcement of His Death. "The Commonwealth Mercury," Thursday, Sept. 9, 1658, 8pp, 8½x6¾ in., with black mourning border. Announcing the passing of "His most Serene and Renowned Highness Oliver Lord Protector…it pleased God about three o'clock afternoon to put a period to his life…." The entire paper is devoted to his death, with the exception of the last page of advertisements. Cromwell remains a very controversial figure in English history--a regicidal dictator to some and a hero of liberty to others. In 1660, Charles II was restored to the throne with the help of Cromwell's former gernal George Monck (see his autograph in this catalog), at which time Cromwell's corpse was dug up, hanged in chains and beheaded. A few minor spots, else fine.
Estimated Value $500 - 600.
