Castro, Fidel (Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz) (1926 -) Cuban revolutionary who overthrew the Batista regime in 1959 and assumed power; as Prime Minister (1959-76) and as President from 1976 to 2008, when failing health prompted him to turn over the reins to his brother Raúl. Document signed ("Fidel Castro Ruz") as President of Cuba, 1p, 16½ x 11¾ in., Havana, 31 July 2001. Castro signs a certificate of recognition for Amaury J. Ulacia Noblet. "To integrate the vanguard of young people who are participating in this educational and social Revolution that our people are carrying out, as a graduate of the 2nd Intensive Course of Social Workers." Some creasing and minor peeling at top edge, not affecting the very bold signature.
