Wooly Mammoth Tooth. Wooly Mammoths (Mammuthus primigenius) had the largest individual teeth of any animal that ever lived. Mammoths had six pairs of molars in both their upper and lower jaws during their lifetime, each one larger than the preceding one. This gigantic 14 x 6 inch near perfect molar was one of the very last sixth molars. The dark brown color and superb smooth surfaces with no chips is very unusual for Mammoth teeth and the root is virtually complete with just a couple of minor chips on the end. Most Mammoth teeth come from the North Sea where they are dredged up in fishing nets resulting in sea damage, cracks and missing pieces, but this museum quality tooth is 30,000-75,000 years old and was found in the frozen tundra of Siberia, Russia where the best preserved Mammoths are found.
