Lot 1487

Triceratops Nose Horn. Not only did Triceratops have long brow horns over their eyes, but also a sharp nasal horn. This good size 6 x 5 inch nose horn was found intact on a private ranch in the 65-67 million year old Hell Creek Formation in eastern Montana. What separates this nose horn from most collected is the overall quality of the light brown bone. The horn is mostly complete except for some cracks that were filled and 2-2.5 inch section on the back of the horn that is missing only its top layer which gives access to the detailed bone quality inside the horn. The detail shows the hollow honey comb structure that enabled Triceratops to keep the weight of its enormous head down. The bone structure consisted of a lattice of bone interspersed with air which is very apparent on this remarkable fossil which also exhibits excellent microscopic detail on its bottom side.
