Plate of White and Gold Ferns. 300 million years ago when these ferns were fossilized in St. Clair, Pennsylvania, trees were much different than they are today with ferns and cycads dominating. These seed ferns became extinct around 73 million years ago. This huge 21 x 11 inch black shale slab is totally covered with dozens of white and gold ferns. These fronds fell into a bog where its oxygen depleted environment turned the leaves into pyrite and then they turned white from aluminum silicates or gold from the presence of iron ore. This plate is much larger than usually found and is both detailed and very colorful.

Add $25.00 for domestic shipping.
Estimated Value $400 - 500.
