Golden Ammonites From Holzmaden, Germany. Holzmaden is famous for its yield of excellently preserved fossils that are roughly 180 million years old and especially for its ichthyosaurs and golden ammonites. These ammonites are extinct relatives of octopus and squid that have had their mother of pearl shell replaced with a golden colored pyrite over the millions of years that they were buried. On this immense 35 x 28 inch black shale matrix is a very large 8.5 inch in diameter pyritized ammonite Harpoceras sp. as well as over 20 other smaller Harpoceras and Dactylioceras ammonites. These ammonites show the defining ribbing patterns that indicate the size of the inner chambers. All ammonites from Holzmaden have been flattened under the pressure of fossilization and the plates can easily be mounted and hung on a wall if desired.
