Lot 1465

Fossil Badlands Turtle With Bite Marks. Stylemys nebrascensis was a 30 million year old tortoise that roamed the White River Formation of the Badlands of South Dakota. This interesting specimen measures 7 x 6 inches and is well preserved with bite marks from some sharp toothed predator with three bite marks on the top of the shell and another bite mark on the plastron. The outer carapace was formed by a series of scutes made of keratin originally (the same material our fingernails are made of). Most of the underside of the tortoise, the plastron, which was formed by bony plates is preserved along with a 1.5 inch leg bone and other bones are clearly still buried in the matrix. Fossils that show evidence of predation and possibly what killed them are highly valued for their scientific interest as well as their beauty.

Add $20 for domestic shipping.
Estimated Value $400 - 600.
