280 Million Year Old Amphibian Larvae. Even though the earliest amphibians ventured forth on land, they still deposited their eggs and the hatching larvae went through all of their developmental stages in the water. This set of four fossils represents four developmental stages from long thin tadpole like animals to a 2.5 inch long transitional animal with short tiny legs to a 3 inch long complete amphibian with small very defined legs but still possessing gills which are visible between the head and first legs. The exact species of amphibian cannot be determined from the larvae, but these fossils were found in the Pdernheim Pfatz in Germany and are found together with adult specimens of Actinodon and Sclerocephalus. All four of these fossils are displayed in a 9 x 6.5 inch clear plastic box.
