Lot 1232

de Lempicka, Tamara. Adam and Eve. (1898-1980) Polish born Art Deco painter. 45½ x 28¾ inch limited edition estate serigraph, 164/195, framed to an overall size of 60 x 43¼ inches. This work, circa 1932, represents the artist's original take on a classical subject and bears the hypnotic elegance of a fine Renaissance masterpiece. Known as much for her artistic ability as her scandalous bohemian lifestyle, both Tamara de Lempicka's work and reputation have become synonymous with the Art Deco movement and the Roaring Twenties lifestyle. A Certificate of Authenticity signed by de Lempicka's daughter, Baroness Kizette de Lempicka, is included.

There is a marvelous story behind this piece. It seems that the female model, a favorite of Lempicka's, paused to eat an apple. The artist went to the window and, seeing a handsome French policemen below on the street, called to him to come up. Being a handsome French policeman, he came up and agreed to pose. The result was this wonderful "Adam and Eve." The two models, we are told, fell in love and got married.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000.
