Lot 952

1840 Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 62 PQ. Lovely golden toning on both sides. A Premium Quality coin for the grade. Attractive deep amber colored accents gleam from within a thin overlay of natural old-silver patina and the entire design is keenly sharp, including all stars. A strong lens is required to find any of the few faint hairlines in the mirror surface.

Proof Seated dollars struck in 1840 to 1850 share a common reverse identified by die lumps on the final A of AMERICA. This is diagnostic. Breen thought this was a restrike but the current belief runs the other way since many other denominations used their reverses year in and year out (the few Proofs made each year did not stress the reverses, so why discard them).

Some diagnostics of the present coin several fine curved lathe lines on the shield below LIBERTY while the reverse has several die lines from the dentils over (STAT)ES O(F). Just recently graded by PCGS. Pop 1; 18 finer with 9 in 63, 7 in PF63, 3 in PF64.
Estimated Value $23,000 - 25,000.
