Lot 918

1795 Flowing Hair Dollar. 3 leaves beneath each wing. NGC graded EF-45 BB-18, B-7 Rarity 1. A fashionable beauty and a bold example by any standards. An engaging display of lively deep natural old-silver patina spreads across the carefully preserved deep gray surfaces of this Type variety. Moreover, the strike is strong for the date, with detail somewhat lacking in the upper hair curls as always (many 1795 dated flowing hair dollars used a Liberty head punch that was in much too high relief for the primitive minting equipment available to the Mint).

The obverse of this variety was used to strike 1795 BB-16, BB-17, and BB-18. Reverse F (as it is known) has three leaves under each wing. The only 14-berry variety. Seven berries on each branch. There is only one berry on left branch of wreath between eagle's wing and ribbon bow.

1795 BB-18 is one of the more available varieties of the year, but is hard to find in higher grades. Probably, about 500 to 800 survive according to the Bowers reference on the series. Pop 2; 2 finer in 53 for the variety.
Estimated Value $11,000 - 12,000.

Realized $11,788
