Lot 917

1795 Flowing Hair Dollar. 3 leaves beneath each wing. . BB-27, B-5, Rarity-1. PCGS graded AU-58 B-5, BB-27, Rarity 1. A bold specimen that spares no compromises with its rich rustic golden to steel gray iridescence on both sides. Strike is much sharper than average for the issue (note the raised die line behind the head, a diagnostic of this BB-27 variety). The only weakness results from some criss-cross adjustment lines in the hair. Luster on both sides. Pop 44; 20 finer. (PCGS # 6852) .

A well-liked die variety, Liberty's flowing hair is in six curls, the 3rd and 4th close together; the 4th has a tiny curved "tail" extending downward, and visible on higher grade pieces. Lowest curl distant from star. A "bar" over 2 mm. long extends diagonally from close to top curl toward point of 5th star. On the reverse, three leaves under each wing. 13 berries, seven on left branch, six on right. Two berries under first T in STATES, one on inside and one on outside of wreath. This reverse was used to strike 1795 BB-25, BB-26, and BB-27.
Estimated Value $30,000 - 35,000.
