Lot 806

1796 Draped Bust Quarter Dollar. NGC graded MS-61. B-2. The familiar high 6 variety, also identified by the curl point being under the E in LIBERTY, easily surpasses the average 1796 quarter dollar in Mint condition. This key date is the first year of quarter dollar production. Furthermore, the 1796 is one of the most eagerly sought-out of all U.S. type coins because it is a one-year Type. A rare draped bust, small eagle issue, only 6,146 pieces were struck. This nicely toned deep silver-gray example maintains much reflectiveness in the fields, a quality shared by others in Mint condition. The strike is typically consistent, showing great detail on the stars and on the interior portions of Liberty, but without the usual weakness on the eagle's head that is more apt to be seen on this date than on other small eagle denominations such as the dime, half dollar, or silver dollar. A great opportunity for both the Type buyer as well as the quarter dollar specialist. Pop 3; 23 finer.
Estimated Value $60,000 - 65,000.
