Sale 48

Lot 73

1805 C-4 R2- Large 5. AU-50. Possible Broadstrike. Frosty chocolate brown and steel with a thin swipe of darker chocolate toning at the rim on the lower left of the obverse and upper left reverse. Lustrous lighter brown and tan covers the protected areas on the reverse. A nick-like planchet void on the rim below the 0 in the date and a shallow nick on the rim right of the chin are the only notable marks. LDS, Manley state 2.0 late, Breen state VI. The die crack through the end of the bust is strong. In addition, the rims are wide and flat on much of both sides, similar to the 1805 C-1 offered earlier in this sale. However, the wide rim feature is not consistent all the way around the rims as if the collar made good contact with parts of the planchet but not all of it during the striking process. Makes an interesting puzzle.
Estimated Value $1,750 - 2,000.
Ex Don Valenziano 8/94.
