Lot 574

1843-1857 Cent with Reverse Brockage. NGC graded VG-10. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with darker chocolate toning in protected areas. No roughness or notable marks. This cent is a reverse brockage strike with a normal reverse impression on one side and an incuse reverse on the other. There is no rotation between the normal and the brockage impressions, and the incuse impression is a bit cupped. The NGC label says the incuse brockage impression was made through a capped die, and the "cap" in this case had to be a struck cent that was stuck to the obverse die. That "cap" must have been struck against a few other planchets before making this piece, which would explain the "cupped" feature and slightly distorted devices and legends on the incuse side of this cent. The date and die variety are difficult to determine, of course, but a careful examination of the normal reverse suggests that this die is from the 1848 N-26 marriage. Normally the reverse of 1848 N-26 cents is weakly impressed in the center due to the somewhat concave face of the N-26 obverse die, but this reverse is well struck since it was not struck against the slightly defective N-26 obverse die. (Dies are normally shaped so they are slightly higher in the center than at the perimeter (convex rather than concave), thus aiding the flow of metal outward from the center as the dies are pressed together. That's how flowline luster is created.) Anyway, this is a really neat mint error and the first this cataloger has seen with a cupped (or "capped" if you prefer) brockage impression. EAC grade consistent with the NGC grade.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 4,000.
