Lot 542

1844 N-4 R1+. MS-62. Lustrous light bluish steel and greenish olive with faint hints of faded mint color showing through in a couple places on the obverse. The surfaces are smooth and the only marks are a tiny speck of darker toning at the dentils left of star 5 and a shallow low spot caused by debris on the die at the dentil tips between stars 2 & 3. EDS, die state b early. The fields are hard and very slightly reflective, especially on the obverse. There is a faint die crack through the tops of UNITED and the coronet tip is a bit softly struck. Tied for CC#5 overall but finest known of the early die state. (Die state a, without the die crack through UNITED, is extremely rare.).
Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,000.
