Lot 536
1843 N-6 R1. NGC graded MS-64 Brown. Mature Head. Repunched 18. Bluish steel brown and chocolate with underlying faded mint red showing through on both sides. Lustrous and attractive. The only defect is a spot of shallow carbon on the face just above the nostril. Otherwise this cent is choice in every respect. MDS, die state b, with a thin but clear rim cud break at star 13. The repunching at the bottom of the 18 remains visible. EAC grade MS63. Tied for CC#5. The NGC label shows the attribution. This is the plate coin used by Howard Newcomb to illustrate the N-6 obverse in his book on the cents of 1816-57. Comes with a nice provenance. Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,500. Ex Howard R. Newcomb, J. C. Morgenthau 5/45:732-Floyd T. Starr, Stack’s 6/13/84:430-R. E. Naftzger, Jr., 1990 EAC Sale, lot 301-Stuart MacDonald, Heritage 9/11/97:5305.
