1797 C-3b R4 Lettered Edge. VF-25. The Low Head variety. Glossy medium chocolate and steel brown with traces of frosty lighter steel brown in protected areas of the reverse. The surfaces are smooth, free of any hint of corrosion or verdigris. The only contact marks are trivial and require a strong glass to find. A faint diagonal hairline at the F in HALF is the best identifying mark. LDS, Manley state 3.0. The die crack from the chin is clear, much stronger than anything described for the variety in the Manley book. Matches Breen's die state V. The reverse is rotated 5 degrees CCW. This piece is in the middle of the condition census for the Lettered Edge version of the Low Head variety. Weight 85.7 grains.
