Lot 341

1798/7 S-151 R3 Overdate 8 over 7. VF-20. Ten points sharper with two parallel horizontal scratches from the mouth to the rim at right. These scratches are very old and blend perfectly into the naturally glossy patina. The surfaces are mostly smooth, but a strong glass reveals some very faint roughness in the fields and protected areas, especially in the field under the hair ribbon and at RICA. Glossy light olive and reddish chocolate brown. M-LDS, Breen state VI. The edge displays traces of diagonal reeding, an abnormal planchet edge described by Breen on a few varieties of early large cents. The date and legends are bold and the overdate feature is obvious. Called VF20 and tied for CC#6 in the Bland census. Noyes says VF25 net F12 and tied for CC#8, his photo #28626. Comes with a long provenance that includes several prominent cent specialists.
Estimated Value $3,500 - 4,500.
