Lot 317

1794 NC-5 R8. Fair-2. Sharpness VG7 with at least a half dozen rim bruises on each side, strongest at UNITED, and the planchet is very slightly bent. The surfaces are covered with fine granularity and there are traces of shallow dark olive verdigris in a few protected areas, strongest at the throat. The date is a bit weak but easily readable and the legends are mostly visible, although OF is gone due to roughness and AMERICA is faint from wear. Rather glossy medium brown and chocolate with reddish brown tones in protected areas. Called net Fair-2 and second finest of only two known in the Noyes and Bland census lists (and the other example is only marginally better with comparable defects). Noyes photo #31636. A rare opportunity to acquire one of the rarest die varieties in the entire Sheldon series.
Estimated Value $15,000 - 20,000.
Ex W. Nyles Spurlock (purchased unattributed circa 1955) 3/21/87-Denis W. Loring-Darwin B. Palmer, Jr.-George E. Ewing, Jr.-(via Darwin B. Palmer 7/10/93)-Daniel W. Holmes, Jr.
