Lot 31

1796 C-1 R6 Fine-15+. Fine-15 Plus. No Pole. Close to VF20 and this piece has been called that by several prominent numismatists over the years. Rather glossy dark steel brown and chocolate. The surfaces are decent but a strong glass reveals traces of microscopic roughness on the both sides. None of the roughness is at all distracting but it does hold back the gloss a bit. There is no trace of verdigris, and the only notable contact marks are a sharp rim nick left of the bottom of the cap and a minor rim bruise under the date. The date is bold and the legends are strong, including HALF CENT. The bisecting obverse die crack is prominent. A highlight of this outstanding collection of US Half Cents. CC#5 for the variety. Weight 79.6 grains. Plated in the Gilbert half cent book and in Wayte Raymond's Standard Catalog to illustrate the No Pole variety. Comes with a long, distinguished provenance, as you might expect for such an important coin.
Estimated Value $125,000 - 150,000.
