Lot 256

1797 C-2 R3 Struck over Spoiled Cent. Good-5. Counterstamped "JC" on the portrait. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and free of notable defects. Lightly cleaned and retoned glossy steel and chocolate brown. Struck on a planchet from an off-center large cent, and bold evidence of the large cent is visible on both sides. A careful analysis of the cent design suggests the reverse is from 1797 S-120/121. The date of the half cent is complete and easily readable but not strong and the legends are complete except where affected by the counterstamp or large cent design. The off-center cent strike reduced the thickness of the planchet in the struck area, and the half cent dies did not contact the planchet sufficiently to leave half cent design in the area struck between the cent dies. A really neat error, one of the boldest cent undertypes seen on a half cent.
Estimated Value $1,250 - 1,500.

Realized $2,875
