Lot 2488

Great Britain. Crown, Nd. S.2652; Dav-3759. James I, 1603-1625. Second Coinage. Mint mark lis. Obverse: King on horseback facing right. Reverse Square garnished shield of arms. Carefully struck on a large very round flan, this is without doubt one of the nicest second coinage James I crowns to appear on the market for a long time. This issue is characterized by its shallow obverse strike, but the detail of this coin is superb, with a reverse which is arguably superior to that of the Slaney specimen, and better than any of the E.D.J. Van Roekel collection Second Coinage crowns. With all lettering sharply defined, the coin has a pleasing pastel tone. NGC graded EF-40.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,000.

Realized $9,200
