Lot 2048

Great Britain. Noble, ND. S.1518; Fr-98. Edward III, 1327-1377. Fourth coinage (1351-77) post treaty period (1369-77). London mint. Obverse: King standing facing in ship bearing sword and shield. Reverse floriated cross with lis at ends. E and pellet in center. This rarer variety Noble glistens with original luster and is beautifully centered on a very round flan. The small cameo portrait is incredibly detailed and the design and letters are crisp and sharply struck. NGC graded MS-63.

*Although a relatively popular and successful King, in terms of foreign conquest and domestic stability, the later years of Edward's reign (when this coin was made) were marked by military failure and growing discontent at home. History has however marked Edward III, who reigned for half a century, as on of England's greatest monarchs.
Estimated Value $6,000 - 7,000.
