Lot 1876

AR Denar (2.95 g) attributed to year 3 (134/5 C.E.). Triform bunch of grapes. Reverse: Two upright trumpets. Mild 162 [4 examples cited]. AJC 60 (this obverse die), AJC 60a (this reverse die). H-730. Boldly struck, Extremely Fine.

Since all coins struck during the Bar Kokhba War were overstruck on Roman host pieces, it is instructive to discover the date and type of the first striking. We know, for instance that some coins minted during the Roman Republic were thus still in circulation nearly two hundred years later in Judaea. This particular coin, for example, was overstruck on an eastern drachm of Trajan.
Estimated Value $700 - 900.
Ex Antiqua XIV, December 2006, lot 108.

Realized $690
