Sale 48

Lot 1866

Large Bronze dated year 2 (133/4 C.E.). Inscription within wreath. Reverse: Amphora with fluted body. Mild 19 [11 examples cited]. AJC 39. H-705. Natural "find" patina Choice Very Fine.

This very rare variety, with legends reading "Shim'on"/"Year 2 of the Freedom of Israel", is very seledom seen for sale. It has only one die pairing. Leo Mildenberg, who wrote the important corpus and analyses of the Bar Kokhba coin series, considered the reverse doe of the large bronze series, bearing the fluted amphora, as the finest and most beautiful design "in the entire Bar Kokhab coinage." A finer example in The Millennia Collection, May 26, 2008, lot 55, realized $132,250.
Estimated Value $25,000 - 30,000.

Realized $33,350
