Lot 1809

[Claudius, A.D. 41-54] AE 20 minted at Antioch. Laureate head of Claudius (?); three counterstamps are "head in rectangle," "LVIF," and another on neck of emperor. Reverse: SC within wreath. Cf. H-801. Host coin: Poor; counterstamps Fine.

A portion of the Sixth Roman Legion ("Ferrata") eventually marched to Jerusalem at the beginning of the Jewish War. Many excessively worn bronzes were still in circulation, so the military mint counterstamped these issues to show their legion's presence as well as their economic validity.
