Lot 143

1804 C-6 R2. Fine-15. Spiked Chin. Five points sharper with some obvious rim nicks, mostly on the reverse. A rim bruise at the first S in STATES and a small one at IC in AMERICA are the most notable marks. The surfaces inside the rims are nice, free of significant contact marks or other defects. Glossy chocolate and steel brown. Very early die state, Manley state 1.0 early, Breen state II, Braig state 0.11. The earliest state seen by this cataloger. There is a faint crack through the tops of MER and a tiny lump on the left top of the N in UNITED. Otherwise the reverse die is unbroken. This is the Breen plate coin for his state II, and the perfect reverse state listed by Breen is not plated in his book (perhaps because it really doesn't exist?). An extremely rare die state.

AN EXTENSIVE RUN OF 1804 C-6 DIE STATES. EVERY DIE STATE IDENTIFIED BY MANLEY IS REPRESENTED, AND ALL ARE FURTHER ATTRIBUTED USING THE MORE-EXACTING DIE STATES ENUMERATED BY GENE BRAIG. SEVERAL OF THE MANLEY PLATE COINS ARE INCLUDED.
Estimated Value $150 - 200.
Ex Rick Leonard (via Lanny Reinhardt) 4/23/93.
