Lot 1069

1892-S Morgan Dollar. Sharpness of MS-63 Prooflike. Well struck with a hint of light golden toning. Small pin scratch across Liberty's neck. There are also a few light hairlines visable in the fields on both sides. A very rare date in high grade.

Many times it has been said that the key date '92-S Morgan dollar was never obtainable in large numbers after date and mintmark collecting took hold with numismatists in the 1930s. While reasonably cheap and available in circulated grades, there are just too few true Mint States for the growing cadre of collectors to obtain an example in Mint condition. As a result, "almost there" About Uncirculated examples have been put forward as "Uncirculated" in the past to supply this shortage.

When the San Francisco Mint dispersed numerous bags of silver dollars starting in the forties and fifties, few if any 1892-S single coins were included, let alone an entire bag. Later, the Treasury Department released millions of silver dollars that also yielded few or no '92-S dollars in mint condition. It is perhaps what many suppose that most of the coins originally made were placed into circulation at the time of issue. A prime opportunity for the astute buyer to acquire a glittering prooflike example of the famous 1892-S Dollar (PCGS # 7218) .
Estimated Value $13,000 - 14,000.
