Lot 4666

1843-D $5 Liberty. Medium D. Our grade is sharpness of Uncirculated, lightly burnished. A needle sharp strike, in fact it has the look of a "specimen striking." Someone lightly buffed this coin long ago with a jeweler's cloth; all lightly toned. Doug Winter observed of the 1843-D that "This is one of the best manufactured Dahlonega half eagles. It is possible to locate an example that is well struck, lustrous, and attractively toned. Finding one with clean surfaces, however, is quite challenging." Although the surfaces of this example are not perfect, it still seems to meet the needs of the numismatic marketplace (PCGS # 8215) .
Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,500.
