Lot 4602

1911-D $2.50 Indian. NGC graded MS-61. A popular key date. Untoned. While the 1911-D quarter eagle is easily the key in this short series, and readily available (for a price) in conditions up to and including About Uncirculated, that is not to say it is at all readily found in true Mint condition. It becomes scarce at this tier of the grading scale. A lovely Mint specimen that exhibits above-average strike and a full-formed mintmark with extensive detail in the war bonnet feathers (no soft areas). The luster, however, is not as bursting and satiny as a choicer example, which explains the 61 grade, though much cleaner in terms of the fewness of marks, which is why we think it more enjoyable to study and consider for a date set (PCGS # 7943) .
Estimated Value $9,000 - 9,500.
