Lot 4028

1878-CC Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65 Prooflike. CAC Approved. A nice white coin. An appealing fresh lustrous specimen, fully struck, and unmarred by discoloration or contact marks other than a couple on the eyebrow and top of Liberty's nose. Quite difficult to encounter in this nice a grade in Gem Prooflike condition. First year of issue. Pop 98; 12 finer in 66 (PCGS # 7081) .

Historic note: Employees at the Carson Mint were given two months after the last trade dollars of 1878 were struck before production on the new Morgan dollars began. Numerous dies and a huge stockpile of blank planchets were delivered to the coining room. Led by Superintendent Crawford, the coiner and his crew ran the first few coins through the press, very pleased with the finished product. The dies were received in mid-April 1878, and within three weeks more than 300,000 1878-CC Morgan silver dollars had been produced, and bags of these new dollars were being shipped to out of state destinations. Approximately 61,000 pieces were part of the GSA sales in the 1970s. Many, if not most, were bagmarked. Fewer still turned out to have prooflike fields and frosted devices like this coin.
Estimated Value $1,800 - 1,900.

Realized $2,185
