Lot 3652

1798/7 S-152 R2. VF-25. Overdate Large 8 over 7. Sharpness EF40 but there is a patch of microscopic porosity in the field over the bust tip. The remainder of the planchet is smooth with only minor contact marks, including a light rim bruise opposite the tip of the nose, a dull rim bruise under the left side of the fraction, and another at the E in UNITED. A nick at the right top of the first T in STATES and a half dozen microscopic specks of greenish verdigris scattered over the reverse round out the imperfections on this otherwise attractive cent. Glossy light chocolate brown with splashes of darker reddish chocolate on the obverse. Sharply struck M-LDS, Breen state III. The devices are bold and the overdate is obvious to the unaided eye. Called EF40 net VF30 and tied for CC#10 in the Bland census. Noyes says VF35 net VF20 and tied for CC#12 in his list, photo #21393. Either way this is an important example of this popular overdate variety.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 6,000.
