Lot 3649

1797 S-134 R4 Planchet Cutter Error. VG-8. Sharpness F15 with traces of very fine corrosion on both sides, mostly on the reverse. Specks of greenish verdigris show in a few of the rough areas, but overall the surfaces are reasonably smooth. Slightly glossy reddish steel and chocolate. LDS with a slightly raised retained cud break between the cracks over the E in AMERICA. This cent shows a strong impression of a misplaced planchet cutter punched deeply into the planchet. This errant impression is located in the field behind the portrait and at the opposing area along the left side of the reverse. A rare type of early mint error, far rarer than an off-center or double strike error. The date is strong and the legends are clear except for UNITED ST, which were affected by the errant planchet cutter mark.
Estimated Value $800 - 1,200.
