Lot 3646

1797 S-123 R4. Fine-15. Sharpness VF30 with a shallow but relatively large pitmark or planchet void in the field under the chin and an abraded dent on the end of the nose. Otherwise the surfaces are decent with only traces of extremely faint roughness hidden under a glossy dark olive and steel patina. The highpoints are a lighter shade of chocolate brown. Possibly retoned long ago, but the eye appeal is decent in spite of the defects. Nicely struck LDS, Breen state IV. The date is bold and the legends are strong. A variety that's easier to find in mint state than mid-grades thanks to the Nichols Hoard.
Estimated Value $500 - 750.
