Lot 3644

1796 S-108 R4. Draped Bust. Sharpness VF20 but covered with fine granularity under a dull dark olive and steel patina. There are traces of shallow verdigris in a couple of the protected areas. The only mark is a planchet void at the dentils over ER in AMERICA, and this void reaches down into the tops of those letters. In spite of this void, the planchet weighs a heavy 13.41 grams (207 grains) versus the thin planchet standard of 168 grains adopted in 1795. This cent appears to have been struck on a planchet made to the old 208 grain standard. Unfortunately, the slab prohibits checking the edge to look for edge lettering, which (if present) would be a significant discovery. We just have to assume the edge is plain. The date and legends are complete and clear.
Estimated Value $400 - 600.
