Lot 3584

1785 Nova Constellatio. Pointed rays. . Type of Breen-1111. PCGS graded EF-40. Housed in an old green holder. Clear details in most of the devices and main legends although somewhat bluntly struck in areas leaving the stars mostly flat. A faint old hairline runs horizontally from the field through the eye. The design on these proposed Confederation issues has the All-Seeing Eye in a glory of rays, punctuated by 13 stars, CONSTELLATIO NOVA around; circular wreath enclosing U.S, LIBERTAS ET JUSTITIA around. On the 1783s, the word ET is omitted, and the U.S is Roman style; on the 1785-dated pieces, the US monogram is in script, deriving from Continental Army buttons, according to the Breen encyclopedia. Breen reports also, "the 1783 date is commemorative; all the coins were struck in 1785-86." Most of these pieces come in low grades, Very Good to Very Fine. Pop 34; 95 finer (PCGS # 813) .
Estimated Value $1,500 - 1,600.
