Lot 3579

1724 Wood's Hibernia Halfpenny. . Type of Breen-166 with stop after date. NGC graded MS-65 Brown. A bold gem that spares no compromises with its rich brown color on both sides with smooth luster. There is even some residual mint red within the devices. Strike is much sharper than average for an early Colonial issue. The Woods pieces were exceptions in this with careful design work and just as careful execution of the strikes. A monument to early 18th century Mint quality.

A few weeks before King George I of England signed the patent in favor of William Wood, authorizing the ROSA AMERICANA coins, he had signed a similar one (June 16, 1722) empowering Wood to make copper halfpence and farthings for Ireland, at 60 halfpence per pound. These latter coins form the basis for the Wood's Hibernia pieces that were exported to America where they did yeoman duty. Pop 1; None finer at NGC (PCGS # 190) .
Estimated Value $9,000 - 9,500.
