Venezuela. Republic. Venezolano, 1876-A (Paris). Eliz-1; WR-1; KM-16. 24.82 grams. Head of youthful Bolivar left. Reverse: Shield with tripart arms, flanked by wreath of sugar cane and coffee, cornucopia above. Choice, sharp strike. Matte to satiny devices on proof-like fields. Some tiny, light handling marks on obverse; the reverse pristine. Very light toning. Extremely Rare in this grade.

One year type. One of the classic rarities in the Republic series - the Pittman specimen, comparable in grade, realized $13,500. NGC graded MS-61.

The name "Venezuela is believed to have been originated by the cartographer and explorer Amerigo Vespucci. He was leading an expedition to the area in 1499 where he observed many native stilt houses in the Guajira Peninsula. This reminded him of houses in Venice, Italy. He named the area Venezuola, meaning little Venice. This was later changed by the Spanish to Venezuela.
