Lot 2299

Germany. Copper Pattern 5 Mark,19(--). Schaaf. 5M.G5. 39 mm. Struck in copper. This unique pattern used the reverse from two different 5 Mark pieces from the late 1800's or early 1900's. The piece has been defaced (most likely at the Mint) with a heavy blow to the center of on side - this resulted in a flattened area on the opposite side. The interesting thing about this piece is the nonsensical legends on the edge. Apparently, the minters just threw together a lettered collar to test out the striking qualities. The lettering is raised, which is opposite of the way it appears on normal coins. Viewing the lettered edge through a mirror (all but one letter "E" is backwards) is the following message and stars: ***TAGNUOZ ZOUGV A JNET ****. NGC graded MS-60 Brown.
Estimated Value $400 - 500.
David Cassel Collection.

Realized $834
