Lot 2265

German States - Hesse-Cassel. 1 Pistole Wilhelm d'or (5 Taler), 1787. Fr-1287; Schütz-2096.1; KM-531; Hoffm.5038. Wilhelm IX (1), 1785-1821. Head right. Reverse Star of Order, date below. Lustrous. NGC graded AU-55.

Pistole is the French name given to a Spanish gold coin in use in 1537; it was a double escudo, the gold unit. The name was also given to the Louis d'Or of Louis XIII of France, and to other European gold coins of about the value of the Spanish coin. Valuing one country's coins against another country was always a difficult task. Apparently 1 Pistole = 2 Escudos = 1 Louis D'Or = 5 Taler.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,400.
David Cassel Collection.
