Lot 2205

German States - Hesse-Cassel. Taler, 1639-GK. Dav-6778; Schütz-1040; KM-179.4; Hoffm.1210. Mintmaster GK (Georg Kruckenberger, 1637-1640). Wilhelm VI, 1637-1663. Star, Crowned Lion dividing date with GK above. Reverse Tree in storm, sun above with Hebrew "JEHOVAH", rain falling. Minor edge crack. Rarest date of all strom talers. NGC graded VF-35.

1639 signals the end of the minting of Storm Talers. In fact, very few were produced that year, and all are rare. No more large silver Talers were even produced until 1652. Apparently, the ravages of war were too much for the economy of Hesse. In 1652, the war was over, and the motif had outlived its usefulness.
Estimated Value $1,500 - 1,700.
David Cassel Collection.
