The term, "Goldgulden" was used well before the term, "Ducat". The goldgulden was a German term used to describe a gold coin equivalent to the gold florins of Venice and the Netherlands. Over time, the coins were debased in fineness, and less trusted by the merchants. This brought about the rise of the ducat. The ducat was of identical weight to the original goldguldens (.1109 fine Gold).
